I’ve found Basecamp to be a less-than-ideal collaborative project management service/software. But I am not sure the alternatives are any better. What are my other options and how do they stack up? (I work for an ad agency, so there is a lot of exchanging files, setting to-do lists, making regularly scheduled tasks, providing group calendars)

I do not have much experience with collaboration project management software/services, so I can’t tell you how they stack up. However, I did some searching and found some decent reading and potential alternatives you could check out.

I hope this helps at least a little. Good luck!
Dan – I would also suggest that you take a look at a tool called Central Desktop. One of the features I enjoy about this tool is the ability to build wiki style operation manuals.
Dan, I’ve been using Smartsheet for the last few months and really like it. Simple and intuitive. I’ve used basecamp, too. I like that one, but Smartsheet has really worked for me. I don’t work for either, just to be clear.

@John — I like the sound of Central Desktop. I would like to test a more wiki-style tool. Thanks for the heads up.
The only one I have used regularly is Basecamp and it is great. However I find myself using Google docs, specifically Spreadsheets and Sites more and more. One reason is that it works far more in an ad hoc project environment – set up 5 people, who may be from 3 different companies, to work on something for a defined period, and then dissolve it. You can do that in Basecamp but it just takes a bit more work. So, for internal/regular/long term collaboration = Basecampe. For ad hoc teams = Google Docs.
