I’m worried about losing all of my blog pictures, purchased and downloaded online, if something should happen to my computer. What is the best and most cost effective way to protect myself? Is it better to store them on a flash drive or use an online backup service? Thanks in advance.

Hi Amanda,
It’s good that you are taking steps to back up your files. There’s something about backups when it comes to small businesses and entrepreneurs — even though people KNOW they should do backups, somehow the backups never get done often enough.
That’s why, for small businesses without IT staffs, I recommend an online backup service. The reason is that you can “set it and forget it.” Most services let you schedule regular automatic backups. Once you pay for your subscription service, set up your account, and schedule your backups, usually you don’t need to do anything more (except not let the service lapse!).
Another alternative is to purchase an external backup disk along with automatic backup software — again, so that you can set it and forget it. Some of the security software, such as McAfee and Norton, even have backup software built into their packages. You just purchase a disk drive.
Flash drives are inexpensive, but the problem is that you have to remember to run backups regularly. Unless you are incredibly disciplined, most people eventually lapse.
You say you are worried about your “blog pictures.” To me, that sounds like they are already stored in two places – your hard drive and the server your blog is hosted on. If your blog isn’t hosted in the same location as your computer (like your house or office), then you really don’t have much to worry about. If you lose the local copy on your computer, then you still have the server copy on your blog (and vice versa of course). I hate to discourage “extra” backups, but if you are worried about money and time, then you may not really need to do anything.
If you want all your files backed up remotely without having to remember to run backups all the time I suggest a data backup solution like Mozy.com. If you don’t have a lot of files there is a free option and even for a lot of data the cost is quite reasonable.
